Tile Calculator

Enter your floor or wall area and tile size to get the tile count and the number of boxes to buy, with cutting waste included.

Area and tile size

How many tiles do I need?

Tile math is area ÷ tile area — with one honest complication: not every tile you buy ends up whole on the floor. Cuts at edges, breakages, and pattern matching all consume tiles, which is why the trade adds a waste allowance before counting boxes.

Tiles = area (with waste) ÷ tile area  ·  Boxes = area (with waste) ÷ coverage per box
Example: a 10 × 10 ft bathroom floor with 12 × 12 in tiles: 100 sq ft = 100 tiles exactly; with 10% waste, 110 tiles, and at 10 sq ft per box, 11 boxes.

How much waste should I allow?

LayoutWaste to allow
Straight grid, square room10%
Diagonal (45°) layout15%
Herringbone / patterned15–20%
First tiling job, brittle stone15% and keep the spares

Boxes matter more than single tiles for one unglamorous reason: dye lots. Tiles from the same production run match; a box bought six months later may not. Buy the full count — including waste — in one order, and keep the leftovers for future repairs.

Frequently asked questions

Should I buy tiles by the count or by the box?

By the box, always — the count tells you the minimum, the box count is what you can actually purchase. This calculator gives you both, with waste already inside both numbers.

Does grout spacing change the count?

Barely. Standard 1/8–3/16 in joints change the tile count by well under 1% on room-sized jobs — far less than cutting waste. The calculator ignores joints on purpose.

How do I count tile for a shower or backsplash?

Measure each wall area separately (length × height) and add them, or enter the total area directly in the area field. Don't subtract for fixtures — the waste allowance absorbs it.

What if my tile size isn't listed?

Choose “Custom size…” and enter the tile's width and length. Works for any rectangle, metric or imperial.
