Flooring Calculator
Count the boxes of laminate, hardwood or vinyl plank flooring a room needs from the coverage printed on the box, with cutting waste included.
How many boxes of flooring do I need?
Plank flooring — laminate, engineered hardwood, vinyl plank — is sold by the box, and every box prints its coverage. The count is the room area, with cutting waste added, divided by that printed coverage. It sounds identical to tile, and the arithmetic is; the waste behaves differently, because planks are long and cuts at the ends of rows are the whole story.
Boxes = area (with waste) ÷ coverage per box
Example: a 12 × 10 ft room is 120 sq ft. With 10% waste that is 132 sq ft, and at 20 sq ft per box you buy 7 boxes — 140 sq ft of flooring in hand.
How much waste do planks really need?
| Layout | Waste to allow |
| Straight rows, rectangular room | 10% |
| Rooms with alcoves, closets, bay windows | 10–15% |
| Diagonal or herringbone layout | 15–20% |
| Long hallways (many short rows) | 15% |
The offcut at the end of one row starts the next, which is why straight plank work wastes less than diagonal work, where every row starts and ends on a mitre. Buy the whole count in one order, from one production run — plank colour and the click-lock profile both vary between runs, and a box bought later can mismatch in shade and refuse to lock. Keep one unopened box's worth of planks after the job if you can: a water-damaged plank five years from now is replaced from the attic stash or not at all. Underlayment for floating floors is sold by the roll to the same area; use the figure with waste included.
Frequently asked questions
Is this the same as the tile calculator?
The shape of the math is the same — area with waste, divided by box coverage — but the guidance differs: plank waste depends on row layout and offcut reuse, and the flooring advice here is about planks and boards. For ceramic or stone tile, use the tile calculator, which also counts individual tiles.
Why do I need a whole extra box for a small remainder?
Because boxes are the smallest purchasable unit and dye lots govern plank flooring. If the math says 6.1 boxes, the answer is 7 — six boxes leaves you a plank short mid-row, and a later box may not match or even lock the same way.
Should the waste allowance cover the closets?
The waste allowance is for cutting, not for extra floor. Add closet and alcove areas to the room measurement first (the square footage calculator's multi-room rows do this), then let the waste percentage do its own job on top.
How long should planks acclimate before laying?
Most makers ask for 48 hours in the room, boxes flat, at living temperature — solid and engineered wood especially. Vinyl plank is more forgiving. Laying cold, shrunken planks in a warm room is how gaps appear in the first season; the box instructions govern.
